Components of an IP camera system

The Camera

NVR and hard drive

Cables and POE switch

IP cameras offer an advantage over older CCTV cameras because they can connect to the internet to instantly stream video. But even though they can connect wirelessly to your internet, the cameras still need power to keep running. A POE (power over Ethernet) switch allows one Ethernet cable to supply both the internet connection and power supply for minimal installation.

How many cameras do I need?

When it comes down to figuring out how many cameras you need, there is no simple answer. While there are several variables, keep in mind the two main considerations: locations and image quality.

Consider all the locations you need a camera installed. Do you need dense video surveillance throughout a site? Or are there a couple of key areas you need monitored, such as an entrance or cash register?

Secondly, how many cameras you need depends in part on resolution. HDTV security cameras have a higher resolution and thus cover more area with greater detail than your average CCTV camera or IP camera. Therefore, you can install one HDTV security camera to monitor a vast area. Furthermore, with digital PTZ, you can pan, tilt and zoom in on specific areas within a scene. In a way, an HDTV security camera can replace several cameras.

The number of cameras you should install depends largely upon the specifics of your site. Luckily, many security camera systems are future proof. One of the main benefits of IP video technology is that it is scalable, meaning it is easy for you to expand your system with additional IP cameras.
